A Lifetime of Public Service
Pat retired in 2019 as Fire Chief for the City of Williamsburg where he had direct oversight of the fire department and emergency management. He has 38+ years of local government experience. His passion for community service was evident in his commitment to ensuring the safety of the Williamsburg community and the fire personnel sworn to protect it.
Pat, the youngest of five children, was born in Hampton, Virginia, attended Hampton City Schools graduating from Hampton High School in 1980. He worked in the offset printing industry while searching for a position as a career firefighter, a passion he developed while serving as a volunteer firefighter. Pat has been married to his wife Sandy for 37 years and they have two adult children and three grandchildren.
After a 28 year career with the City of Newport News Fire Department, Pat looked to broaden his experience as it relates to leadership. At the conclusion of an extensive search in February 2009, Pat was selected to fill the vacant Deputy Fire Chief Fire position for the City of Williamsburg. In July 2009, he was appointed Fire Chief to succeed the retiring Chief. During his tenure, he focused on the future of the department, which included building strong partnerships in the community. He was also determined to maintain operational effectiveness and provide excellent customer service.
Pat earned an A.A.S. and B.S Degree in Fire Science and completed numerous courses through the Virginia Department of Fire Programs, Virginia Department of Emergency Management, and many other organizations. Additionally, he attended leadership development courses at the Weldon Cooper Institute at the University of Virginia and the National Fire Academy in Emmitsburg, Maryland. Pat is a Past President of the Virginia Fire Chiefs Association and he continues to serve on various boards and committees that promote a safer community.
After a few short months of retirement, Pat realized what he already knew, he is a public servant at heart. He has a genuine desire to utilize his 38+ years of local government experience to enhance the quality of life for all members of the Williamsburg community while improving Williamsburg as a tourist destination.
